“The best time to work as an illustrator is that time of day when you couldn’t care less” -Jamie Andrews

CLIENT: Retro Magazine

A conceptually simple outcome to illustrate a “quit smoking” article. A quick turnaround from briefing to submission. Figurative work kindly modelled by Danielle Davies.

Pretty soon, UWIC will charge all students a £100 “studio fee” regardless of their course. I’d imagine this will piss everyone off (me included), but unfortunately I need to take a pretty neutral stance with this illustration.

Pen/ink, watercolour. All brought together and finalised on Photoshop.

Figurative work kindly modelled by Daf Jones and Richard Savage. Various stages of the process:

Some further work carried out for Retro. An article about January 24th, which is apparently the most depressing time of the year (based on various statistics and polls). A combination of poor weather, no daylight and holiday debt all help to build a pretty piss-poor day for everyone. I’ve scribbled a reminder in the calendar above my desk… and y’know what? I plan to throw a party on that very day. No researcher is gonna tell me not to have fun.

OK, so here (below) is the actual illustration… figurative drawing is wholly pencil and watercolour. The “raining calendar dates” are drawn in pen, the background is a watercolour wash and finally, the red umbrella is a purchased stock photo. I produced all the elements individually on various supports, scanned/photographed them and then digitally stitched everything together.

And some closeups:

  1. I really like this, Ed! simple, but it really works; the annoyance (to me) is in the “one hundred pounds ONLY” haha. I think it’s subtle, but quite strong. successful illustration, mate! ;)
